Better Kensington
Our History
From 1897 to today — the story of one of Johannesburg's oldest and most characterful suburbs.
Est. 1897
Over a century of
heritage & character
From Max Langermann's vision of a "health resort" suburb to today's vibrant creative hub — Kensington's story is woven into the fabric of Johannesburg itself.
Kensington Founded
Max Langermann, a Bavarian mining entrepreneur and Rand Pioneer, establishes Kensington. He names it after the fashionable London borough, envisioning a prestigious residential area.
Anglo-Boer War
Development is halted as the South African War disrupts the region. Kensington remains a 'proposed township' on maps during this period.
Township Established
The Kensington Estate Co Ltd finalises the township layout. Streets are named after British generals Roberts and Kitchener. The distinctive tree-lined character begins to take shape.
The 'Health Resort'
Kensington is marketed as an escape from the dust and bustle of the mining areas — a place of cool summers, fresh air, and scenic koppies. The suburb attracts families seeking quality of life.
Heritage Buildings Rise
Jeppe High School for Boys (est. 1890, the oldest public school in Johannesburg), the mysterious castle, and the Scottish Horse Memorial are built, giving Kensington its distinctive character.
Established Suburb
Kensington becomes a well-established middle-class suburb with beautiful homes from the 1920s and '30s. The tree canopy matures, creating the leafy streets we know today.
Creative Renaissance
Artists, academics, and creative professionals discover Kensington's charm. Queen Street begins its transformation into a hub for antique shops, cafés, and restaurants.
Building Better Together
Better Kensington launches to unite residents in preserving our heritage while building a thriving, safe, and vibrant community for generations to come.
